Guests of the Nation (1935, Ire. Denis Johnston, b/w silent. 16mm/DCP. 45mins.)
Based on Frank O’Connor’s masterful short story, this film is set in the Anglo-Irish war (1916-21) and features a rural IRA unit that has captured two British squaddies, held for ransom. A marvellously cinematic experiment in adaptation showing real flair for the visual.
With live improvised score provided by pianist Josh Johnston, grandson of the film's director.
